About the Artist

I’m Charla Maarschalk
Painter of Faces, Advocate, Educator

I’ve been a professional, self-representing artist for over a decade. I’m based in the beautiful Okanagan Valley of British Columbia, Canada with my roots still firmly planted on the rocky east coast of Newfoundland.

I’m also a photographer, graphic designer, director, architect-at-heart and most importantly a mom of boys.

My art practice is focused on large scale gestural faces that explore the layers of human identity.

Our Differences
Make Us The Same

The human race is a vast category if you look at it from a 'differences' point of view. But when you look at who each of us really is....underneath the layers of experience and genes...we are one beautiful category of people, the same, made in the Image of God for love and relationship.

That is what I paint.

BIOGRAPHY

CHARLA MAARSCHALK (b. 1976, Gander, Newfoundland, Canada)

Newfoundland born, Kelowna based artist, Charla Maarschalk is known for her large scale gestural Faces that explore the layers of human identity. She is interested in the process of combining thread with paint, connecting ancestral truths to our modern world. The emotive response to the texture, layers and details in her work reveals the story hidden within us

The human race is a vast category, if you look at it from a 'differences' point of view. But when you look at who each of us really is....underneath the layers of experience and genes...we are one beautiful category of people, the same, made in the Image of God for love and relationship.

Charla received her BFA at the University of Calgary (Calgary, Alberta) in 1999 and completed a New Media program at Sheridan College (Oakville, Ontario) in 2000. She continues the journey towards deconstructing the human relationship with abstract connections between color, texture and human experience, always conveying a sense of joy and generosity of spirit.
